Surveys galore – BSP Consumer Expectation Survey

A few surveys have recently been published to show the public’s trust rating for President Rodrigo Duterte and the news is as expected – excellent.

I would like to share a less publicized survey that also shows how much the public trusts the President – From the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Consumer Expectation Survey:

Just in case you missed it, here are some key points from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Consumer Expectation Survey:

  • Consumer outlook improved for Q3 2016, with the optimists outnumbering the pessimists for the first time since the nationwide survey started in Q1 2007.
  • According to respondents, their optimism was buoyed by: (a) improvements in the peace and order situation; (b) availability of more jobs; (c) stable prices of commodities; (d) anticipated increase in salaries; (e) effective governmentpolicies; (f) assumption into office of the new administration as well as its pronounced campaign against drugs; and (g) assistance from government such as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

This particular survey is important because it measures consumer confidence in the economy which has a huge impact on GDP growth. Although the survey does not directly ask if the respondents agree with or trust Duterte, the reasons they cite for their confidence can be directly attributed to Duterte. This administration has used peace and order and the fight against drugs as its main platform every since the campaign period. This administration has also promised and delivered on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of government policies and services and it also expanded the 4Ps program of the DSWD. This survey shows that the Duterte support does not only provide him with political capital, but it has also re-invigorated the country’s consumer base.
