After just 100 days in office, our dear president has done a great job in creating a government of the people, by the people and for the people. Here are the 10 most important achievements in my opinion:
1. Executive Order # 1: Restructured some offices under the President to be more responsive to the needs of combating poverty in the Philippines. This showed the thrust of the Duterte Administration towards addressing the extreme needs of the people. Compare that to PNoy’s first EO (The Truth Commission) which was then declared by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional. This started PNoy’s hate for SC Corona which he then got impeached. The previous administration started its rule with vindictiveness and hate while the Duterte administration started its rule with hope and a promise of making sure that the government is more responsive to the needs of the people.
2. Executive Order # 2: Freedom of Information became a directive of the Executive branch. This will pave the way for transparency at least in the executive department. Issuing an Executive order showed to the legislative body that Freedom of Information is at the top of the administration’s agenda. No previous administration has taken Freedom of Information this seriously. The previous administration which had the political capital to impeach a Supreme Court justice, did not use that political capital to railroad Freedom of Information bill in the legislative branch. The previous administration saw vindictiveness against a political opponent more important than real social progress.
3. Nationwide 911 emergency service. Within his first 100 days, Duterte was able to roll-out a nationwide 911 emergency service and the 8888 complaint hotline. This is in-line with his campaign promise to be more responsive to the immediate needs of the Filipino people – both emergency (911) and complaint about government (8888). This move was another manifestation of the administration’s goal to transform the government into a servant of the people.
4. Opening a one-stop-shop for Filipino OFW’s. A service long demanded by our modern day heroes but was neglected by the previous administration. Again this shows the Administration’s responsiveness to the needs of the people who need government the most. Here is a good article on what else the Duterte administration has done for the OFW community.
5. The Administration started taking steps to seriously help the Filipino Farmers and Fisher-folks. Here are some examples:
- Department of Agriculture released Php 2 Bn worth of idle farm equipments.
- Department of Agriculture launches Program for Unified Lending to Agriculture (PUNLA).
- Serious Agrarian Reform is finally here.
6. Protection of the Environment over the business interest of mining companies. This administration and through the DENR secretary, is taking on the entrenched business interest of mining companies. The strict implementation of mining regulation has put the power back on the regulator which is what governance should be.
7. Validity of Drivers license increased to 5 years.
8. Resumption of Pease negotiation with the CPP-NPA and a declaration of a joint ceasefire.
9. Drop in crime rate nationwide.
10. An aggressive war against drugs resulting in over 700,000 users and pushers surrendering to the government and over 18,000 arrests. Unfortunately this huge positive is overshadowed by the one-sided media hype about the very small percentage (0.42{560c5a826b9d0f79d9056f2e452d35fface599afff45834a592fa1a3f7fd1a74}) of police involved deaths and the vigilante killings.
