The European Union report on Human Rights and Democracy claimed that the situation in the Philippines considerably worsened during the term of Duterte. It called on the Duterte administration to conduct the war on drugs within the law including due process and safeguarding the right to life. The EU has been very vocal against the Duterte administration recently after Duterte declared that he will not accept any EU aid. Duterte clearly wanted to send a message to the EU that they are not relevant to the Philippines’ development and prosperity.
Duterte’s strong stance against Western colonialism and meddling with our democratic affairs is the hallmark of his foreign policy that is independent of our past colonial masters. The EU’s ego and arrogance could not accept the fact that some brown guy in a developing country could be this arrogant as to declare them irrelevant that they felt they had to retaliate. This is one way they are retaliating – using their influence in the international community to vilify a dully elected administration.
Their statement is very misleading and very narrow minded. To the European Union, the fact that there are people dying and people getting arrested it is already tantamount to human rights violation. Nowhere in their report did they mention conducting any systematic study to investigate the allegations of human rights. To the EU, all that matters is that people are dying and 40,000 people have been arrested.
What do they expect our police officers do when they are conducting a drug raid and the suspect fights back endangering both the police officer and the public? Call a time-out and hope the drug-crazed suspects don’t shoot? What do they expect our police officers do when the suspects resists arrest? Quit and let them go? I also do not understand why they are complaining about 40,000 people getting arrested? What is with that number? Is the EU claiming all of them were wrongfully arrested? Where is their proof? What do they want our police officers do? Shoot them instead of arresting? If that’s what the EU wants then why are they complaining about the deaths? If they are complaining about the deaths then why are they also complaining about the arrests? The only explanation I can think of for this inconsistency is the fact that the EU just want’s the Philippines to stop its fight against drugs. Why?
Could it be because Alkermes, the manufacturer of Vivitrol, is headquartered in Ireland? Could it be that the EU wants the Philippines to just let addicts continue with their addiction so there could be demand for Alkermes products in the Philippines? Vivitrol is one of the leading drug prescribed by professionals in the US to fight opioid addiction. Are they seeing a potential market being destroyed by Duterte’s fight against illegal drugs? It makes sense.
