The SWS recently released a survey measuring how optimistic Filipinos are regarding their quality of life in the next 12 months. The message of the survey is clear – Filipinos during the early term of Duterte have record levels of optimism regarding improvements in their quality of life in the next 12 months.

The SWS survey I am talking about asked respondents about how optimistic they are about changes in their quality of life in the next 12 months. In every aspect of the survey, Filipinos during the early term of Duterte, expressed very high optimistic outlook regarding their quality of life in the next 12 months. According to this survey, Filipinos are highly optimistic that their quality of life in the next 12 months will be better.
Filipino optimism during the early months of the Duterte administration is not only high but record setting compared to the past administrations.
So why did the media not cover this survey result as much? It is expected because the survey was good news for the Duterte administration. They did not give it that much attention because it ran counter to the story they were spinning.
Reading the news in the last two weeks made me a little worried that the Duterte administration was losing too much political capital. I started worrying that his public support was starting to crack. Reading headlines like these made me worried that Duterte was losing it.

Why did this survey gain very little traction this week? Because the media was trying to sell a fake story of “national discontent” regarding the Marcos burial in the LNMB. I know critics will say the survey is not a good measure of current public sentiment because the survey was conducted before the Marcos burial. They may be right but I want to remind them that Duterte was under a huge shit-storm in September – remember Matobato? The opposition, lead by De Lima and aided by the media orchestrated a demolition job against the president accusing him of mass murder. Even with those accusations, Filipinos were still optimistic. Do you expect me to believe that allowing Marcos to be buried in the LNMB, which he was open about since the campaign period, will have a significant effect on Filipino optimism on their quality of life under Duterte rule? I don’t think so.
